Personal Injury Claims for Uber and Lyft Accidents: Navigating Complex Liability and Insurance Coverage Issues

Recording of a 90-minute CLE webinar with Q&A

Conducted on Wednesday, July 26, 2017
Recorded event now available

This CLE webinar will provide guidance to personal injury attorneys for navigating the complex liability and insurance coverage issues that arise from auto accidents involving rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft. The panel will discuss the plaintiff and defense perspectives on this emerging area of the law.

Description

Uber and Lyft rideshare services have radically impacted the taxi and transportation industry and continue to grow at a rapid pace. Uber currently operates in 231 U.S. cities and claims to be worth $68 billion. Lyft is valued at $7.5 billion and intends to serve 300 U.S. cities by the end of 2017.

As Uber and Lyft rideshare services continue to expand, auto collisions involving rideshare drivers have also spiked. Drivers are required to simultaneously drive and pay attention to smartphone apps for directions and customer information, as well as to navigate unfamiliar areas of cities, which increases the likelihood for accidents.

Passengers, pedestrians and drivers of other vehicles injured as a result of an auto collision caused by an Uber or Lyft driver may pursue compensation for their injuries from the driver and from the rideshare company.

Personal injury claims involving Uber and Lyft present unique liability and insurance issues since the drivers are typically treated as independent contractors, instead of employees, and the companies label themselves technology platforms rather than transportation companies.

Listen as our panel of plaintiff and defense counsel examines the unique issues counsel face in bringing or defending against claims for injuries sustained in accidents caused by rideshare drivers. The panel will discuss how to prove or challenge liability and unravel insurance coverage complexities.

Outline

  1. Overview of ridesharing companies' policies on auto collisions
  2. Bringing or defending personal injury claims for accidents involving Uber or Lyft
    1. Liability considerations
    2. Insurance considerations
