This CLE course will provide guidance for healthcare counsel on preparing for Medicare and Medicaid compliance audits and appealing unfavorable audit results.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and state governments have intensified their pursuit of fraud, abuse and waste in the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and have hired contractors to audit provider documentation and identify overpayments.

Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs), Medicare Recovery Audit Contractors (RACs), and Zone Program Integrity Contractors (ZPICs) have been deployed to audit for Medicare overpayments, while Medicaid Integrity Contractors (MICs) are auditing the Medicaid program.

By examining the trends and outcomes of audits conducted thus far, providers and their counsel can gain an understanding of how to prepare for the audits, navigate the appeals process and challenge the results if needed.

Listen as our panel of healthcare attorneys explains how MAC, MIC, RAC and ZPIC audits are being used to stamp out healthcare fraud, abuse and waste; strategies for preparing for Medicare and Medicaid audits; and best practices for appealing unfavorable findings.

  1. Latest trends in Medicare and Medicaid audits
  2. MAC audit preparation and appeal strategies
  3. RAC audit preparation and appeal strategies
  4. ZPIC audit preparation and appeal strategies
  5. MIC audit preparation and appeal strategies

The panel will review these and other key questions:

  • How are MACs, MICs, RACs and ZPICs being used to identify and curtail wasteful spending in the Medicare and Medicaid programs?
  • What are the most common mistakes that result in Medicare and Medicaid overpayment?
  • What can healthcare providers do now to prepare for potential MAC, MIC, RAC and ZPIC audits?
  • What are some best practices for healthcare providers for challenging an unfavorable audit outcome?

Following the speaker presentations, you'll have an opportunity to get answers to your specific questions during the interactive Q&A.
