Healthcare, Blockchain and Smart Contracts: Emerging Issues for Healthcare Counsel

Leveraging Distributed Ledger Technology in Healthcare, Protecting Privacy and Security

A live 90-minute CLE webinar with interactive Q&A

Wednesday, October 4, 2017 (in 13 days)
1:00pm-2:30pm EDT, 10:00am-11:30am PDT

This CLE webinar will familiarize healthcare counsel with the technology and current and potential uses of blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) in the healthcare industry. The panel will also discuss potential legal and regulatory hurdles for companies moving transactions and information onto a distributed ledger, including a blockchain.

Blockchain offers extensive possibilities for the healthcare industry, including management of patient records, pharmaceuticals and payments.

DLT and blockchains are a decentralized, peer-to-peer networked database that stores, verifies, monitors and authenticates a ledger of assets and transactions without a third-party intermediary. The best known use to date has been in Bitcoin, but mainstream businesses are employing distributed ledgers for various other purposes.

For example, healthcare API company PokitDok recently worked with Intel to create DokChain, a blockchain network for the healthcare industry. DokChain records administrative aspects of patient care and connects health insurers and payers to enable data exchange.

Healthcare counsel must prepare to advise clients who are creating or participating in a blockchain and smart contracts. Counsel will need an understanding of the technology as well as the legal ramifications of blockchain and smart contracts.

Listen as our authoritative panel explains the technology and protocols behind blockchain and DLT, and the potential applications in healthcare. The panel will also discuss some of the legal hurdles in implementing blockchain, including regulations relating to electronic signatures and enforceability of smart contracts.

  1. Blockchain and DLT
  2. Healthcare applications
    1. Patient records
    2. Exchanges of data
    3. Payment
    4. Use of smart contracts
    5. Pharmaceuticals and medical supplies
  3. Legal concerns and challenges for healthcare counsel

The panel will review these and other key issues:

  • What is distributed ledger, and how does it change documentation of healthcare transactions and information?
  • What are some of the current and proposed uses of blockchain in the healthcare industry?
  • What are the advantages of DLT and blockchain to address administrative aspects of patient care, payment matters, and issues related to pharmaceuticals and medical supplies?
