State CLE Requirements

Attorneys A-M (Even years): 30 hours per compliance period
Compliance period: July 1 to June 30 (For two year period starting July 1, 2010)

Attorneys N-Z (Odd years): 30 hours per compliance period
Compliance period: July 1 to  to June 30  (For two year period starting July 1, 2010).

6 hours in the area of professionalism, civility, legal ethics, diversity and inclusion, or mental health and substance abuse.

Beginning with the two-year reporting period ending June 30, 2019, these minimum six hours shall include either completing the Rule 795(d)(11) year long Lawyer-to-Lawyer Mentoring Program or at least one hour in the area of diversity and inclusion and at least one hour in the area of mental health and substance abuse.

 

Compliance Deadline:

June 30

Reporting Deadline: July 31 following last day of compliance period.

Credit Hour: 60 minutes (rounded down to 1/4 hour)

Newly Admitted Attorneys:

Attorneys admitted in Illinois on or after October 1, 2011 who are not exempt must complete certain required credits and then report to the MCLE Board by the stated deadlines:

Earning credits:

1. A course accredited as a Basic Skills Course. In lieu of that course, an attorney may undertake a mentoring program approved by the Commission on Professionalism (www.2civility.org); and

2. At least nine other hours of Illinois-approved CLE credit, including any amount of professional responsibility (PR) credit. Participating in a mentoring program cited in Part 1 counts toward these nine hours only if it was not completed in lieu of the Basic Skills course.

Parts 1 and 2 (which may include enrollment in an approved mentoring program) must be done by the completion deadline. The completion deadline is the last day of the month that you were admitted to the Illinois bar – one year later.
