It’s hard enough for corporate tax specialists to defend their interests in a state sales tax audit. The task gets even harder in a use tax audit.
Not only are you dealing with different corporate departments, you are seeking different support documentation. On top of that, the definitions of a taxable “use” of a product vary widely from state to state.
Meanwhile, as state government coffers suffer in the economic downturn, revenue departments are pushing their auditors hard to improve collections on use tax from both businesses and consumers.
Listen as our panel of veteran tax pros gives you practical guidance and insights into managing a state or local use tax audit, including the valuable advance work on documentation and audit planning that can tip the scales in your company's favor.
The panel included:
Janet Zahn, Advisory and Audit Manager, ExxonMobil Inc., Houston.
Sharon Davis, Senior Tax Analyst, EPCO Inc. and subsidiaries, Houston. She manages the analysis, maintenance and operation of EPCO's use tax software and coordinates sales and use tax audits. Previously, she was a Senior Tax Consultant in the State and Local Tax Practice of Ernst & Young, where she specialized in sales/use tax managed audits and refund analysis.
Sean Nicholson, Senior Sales and Use Tax Manager, Target Corp., Minneapolis. He has been with Target for 20 years in sales tax policy, planning, audits and compliance roles. He also was a field auditor and audit plans specialist with the Minnesota Revenue Department for six years.
Debra Sandoval, Director, SALT Practice, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Houston. She has more than 15 years of sales and use tax experience, including nine years at PricewaterhouseCoopers working with oil and gas and petrochemical clients. She also previously worked at Valero Corp. as a senior manager of tax research and planning.
The panel explores these and other key issues:
- How to consistently get the support documentation you’ll need from other company departments.
- Preventive measures, such as training staff to prevent use tax overpayments and doing a better job of accruing tax manually or with different systems.
- Specific strategies for negotiating samples for use tax audits.
- How to make direct pay programs work for your company.
