With Concealed Weapons Laws
CD of Teleconference with Q&A
|
and Premises Liability Report
In February 2007, a warehouse worker brought a semi-automatic pistol to work in his car, walked into the company break room with the concealed gun, and fatally shot a worker's husband in the head. In scores of other workplace shootings, workers brought guns onto company property in a vehicle.
How can corporate security departments enforce "no guns" policies within legal restrictions? What signage and educational campaigns have been effective—and permissible—under current law? Can security perform searches of people and their cars—and minimize negative employee reaction?
Listen as our panel of veteran corporate security leaders and security consultants offers experiences that will help you build the framework of an effective, safe and legal approach to dealing with the firearms risk at company sites.
The panel included:
J. Patrick Murphy, President, LPT Security Consulting, Houston. His career in private security, law enforcement and consulting spans 32 years, including work as a security leader for a Fortune 50 company. He's a frequent expert witness on cases for adequate security.
Alan Greggo, Loss Prevention Director, Luxottica Retail, Mason, Ohio. He has more than 26 years of loss prevention experience and is active in ASIS. He leads loss prevention efforts for a group that includes the LensCrafters and Pearle Vision stores, among other chain.
Jay Beighley, Security Director, Nationwide Insurance, Columbus, Ohio. He has designed security standards for Nationwide’s facilities around the world and incorporated a security company within Nationwide with its own P&L. Jay is the author of two security textbooks.
Jim Sawyer, Director of Security and Transportation, Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, Seattle.
The panel gave you valuable insights into these and other critical issues and questions:
- What is the current state of concealed weapons laws, and what must security understand about striking a balance between individual freedoms and a secure work environment?
- What legal rights can corporate security departments exercise to restrict guns in the workplace or ban them altogether?
- What security initiatives have your peers tried that have proved effective—or ineffective—in controlling the presence of guns at work?
- How can security contribute to customer and employee perceptions regarding firearms policy enforcement as being neither too harsh nor too lenient?
