and Premises Liability Report
Think workplace violence can't happen at your company? Think again. There are more than 1,000,000 workplace assaults each year, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 516 workplace homicides in 2006.
The cost to American companies exceeds $4 billion each year when domestic strife, tension between workers and strained vendor relationships erupt into violence.
In this highly charged business era, prudent security executives in all industries and companies of all sizes need to anticipate outbreaks of workplace violence, train staff to spot the danger signs, and create and drill on crisis management plans to contain and de-escalate the outbreak.
Listen as our panel of experienced corporate security leaders and consultants specializing in workplace violence offers you the benefit of their perspectives and lessons learned.
Our panel included:
Barry Nixon, Executive Director, National Institute for the Prevention of Workplace Violence, Lake Forest, Calif. His organization helps companies craft anti-workplace violence programs. He previously spent 20 years in corporate HR and organizational development and nine years and a frequent speaker and writer.
Felix Nater, President and Owner, Nater Associates, New York. His firm specializes in workplace violence and security consulting for small and mid-sized companies. He has more than 30 years of experience in security and law enforcement professions.
Joanne Colucci, Director of Global Security, American Express Co., New York. She is responsible for the company's threat assessment team, among other security responsibilities. She has assessed thousands of workplace violence cases for the company, most involving domestic abuse.
Clyde Miller, Security Director, BASF Corp., Florham Park, N.J. He leads critical security initiatives such as a crisis response plan for all BASF corporate offices and production sites in North America. He previously was Security Director at Gateway Inc. and a Senior Security Executive at Texas Instruments and Halliburton.
The panel gives you new insights that helps you understand how to do a better job in:
- Assessing the strengths and weaknesses in your company's readiness to deal with workplace violence
- Identifying behaviors that signal the potential for violence and anticipating scenarios most likely to set the stage for assaults
- Ensuring that company policies and procedures are designed to pinpoint potential trouble—and emphasize preemptive measures
- Honing watchful eyes both within your security staff and other corporate departments
- Responding swiftly and wisely if, despite your best efforts, violence does occur
