and Premises Liability Report
The toughest challenge that confronts many corporate security departments and guard services is consistently recruiting capable security officers and retaining them in a competitive labor market.
Bad hires and high turnover can lead to disaster on many fronts: failure to maintain a high standard of protection, poor customer relations, decreased morale among the rest of the officers, and the possibility of mistakes that can expose your company to potential lawsuits.
Listen as our panel of corporate security leaders shares successful tactics and experiences on the hiring and retaining front, and very real, costly mistakes.
The panel included:
Ron Morris, Senior Director of Protective Services, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati. He has worked for the hospital since 1993 after spending several years in security for an Indiana hospital and for Walgreen Co., and as a special agent with the Illinois Department of Investigation.
Santo Scribani, Northeast Regional Vice President, BM Security Services, New York. Combined with sister companies, ABM is one of the nation's largest privately held providers of guard services.
Matthew Blowers, Security Manager, Harley-Davidson Inc., Milwaukee, Wis. He manages physical security at several company sites in its home state of Wisconsin. He previously worked in security management for a large manufacturer.
Robert Parrish, Security Director, Arizona Public Service, Phoenix. He is in charge of all physical security, investigations, and site and threat assessments for the utility. He retired as a commander after 18 years with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department.
The panel gave new insights into recruiting and retaining capable security officers, including how to:
- Take advantage of traditional and more unusual channels that are bringing in qualified candidates with an aptitude for the officer’s job.
- Network effectively with corporate security colleagues and police for officer prospects.
- Determine when someone without security experience is still a great hire.
- Retain valuable employees with an innovative mix of compensation, training and other opportunities – without breaking the bank.
