Global climate change and reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) are top of mind issues for businesses across the U.S. and throughout the world.
While the U.S. is the only industrialized country that is not committed to the Kyoto Protocol's cap and trade system to reduce greenhouse gases, many state and local governments are creating their own programs to reduce GHGs, including New York's Regional GHG Initiative launching in Jan. 2009.
Companies that currently pursue GHG reduction or want to participate in such programs must understand the dynamic and evolving legal environment to take full advantage of the opportunities available.
Listen and participate from your telephone as our panel of environmental law attorneys examines the legal environment surrounding GHG reduction efforts, the complexities and advantages of emissions trading, and best practices to reduce such emissions and take advantage of the available business opportunities.
The panel includes:
Scott D. Deatherage, Partner, Thompson & Knight, Dallas. He leads the firm's Climate Change and Renewable Energy Practice Group. He advises clients on carbon credit transactions, including the purchase and sale of such credits. He also advises clients on climate change and greenhouse gas legislation and the effects on corporate strategy to manage both risks and to leverage opportunities.
Reed D. Rubinstein, Shareholder, Greenberg Traurig, Washington, D.C. He concentrates on environmental and administrative law and handles matters involving development, implementation, and management of environmental, health, and safety programs for clients. He also handles matters, involving structuring pollution, cost-cap, and other risk transfer insurance, litigating environmental and mass tort coverage claims.
Paul E. Gutermann, Partner, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, Washington, D.C. He litigates cutting-edge issues arising under all the major statutes and negotiates environmental issues in corporate mergers, divestitures and restructuring. He represent clients in connection with the development of federal legislation, including efforts to regulate carbon emissions under the Clean Air Act.
The panel will review these and other key questions:
- What are the legal and regulatory frameworks for GHG emission reduction programs in the United States and other parts of the world?
- What are the best strategies for companies and counsel to clarify the legal uncertainties involved in reducing emissions?
- How can companies take advantage of the emerging opportunities for carbon trading to reduce overall GHG emissions?
Following the speaker presentations, you’ll have an opportunity to get answers to your specific questions during the interactive Q&A.
