Security In Many Industries Can't Feel Festive At Holidays
Anticipating problems with wild families, robberies, shoplifting
From Corporate Security
In the security arena, the Christmas holidays aren't murder just on the retail industry. In multiple industries (some of which you wouldn't expect), security leaders annually must ramp up on staff and countermeasures to deal with a seasonal burst of theft, assaults, vandalism and other crime.
Corporate Security Newsletter asked three security leaders in different industries about their holiday headaches and the tactics they undertake in response.
Drinking Parties Test Security
The holiday cruises run by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd./Miami pack ships with teenagers and younger children on family trips. Almost invariably, that leads to problems with underage drinking, mistreating the elevators and sprinting around the decks and hallways, Security Manager Howard Newhoff said.
Mail Centers Remain Critical, Need Security's Attention
Reexamine your handling procedures, equipment, buildings
From Corporate Security
Several years have passed since the anthrax scare and keeping tight control over the packages and envelopes arriving at a company's mail center has slid down most security leaders' priority lists. However, the potential ease of routing a bomb or toxic substance to an executive's desk should remain just as worrisome today.
One company that has continued to emphasize mail security is Brookfield Financial Properties, a Boston-based real estate company that manages a high-rise office building with financial services tenants.
Security Director Rick Barnes decided the riskiest items coming into the building's central mail center are those from unknown or unusual sources or delivery services. His company lets standard mail and UPS and DHL packages enter through the lobby without going through screening machines. Security relies on those regular senders because they conduct their own screening with the latest technology long before the packages enter the building.
Women Need Special Attention In Travel Security
Same crime, customs put them at higher risk than men
From Corporate Security
If your company's security department is integrally involved in safety of traveling staff, abroad and domestically, that's great. However, always bear in mind that women on business travel face particular risks and generally a higher level of risk than do men, noted Darlene Radloff, chief of security training and education at consulting firm ASI Group/Houston.
Consider making special efforts with training programs, tips and guidance for female staff, as well as thorough research and advisories on how women are treated in foreign countries, said the trainer who has conducted such programs at Home Depot Inc./Atlanta and The World Bank in Washington.
